Who must file a Canadian tax return?
If you are new to Canada or you are starting your first job, you may be wondering if you are required to file a tax return.
In short, most workers in Canada are required to file a tax return where they have had to pay tax for the year.
The deadline for filing your tax return and paying any balance of tax due is usually 30 April of the following tax year. In other words, the tax return that you file will relate to the income you earned in the previous year.
It is always advisable to file as early as possible and to avoid the ‘deadline rush’. So while the deadline to file is 30 April you can choose to file from mid-February.
If you miss the deadline you may be hit with fines or penalties by the CRA.
However, one of the main positives about filing a tax return is that there is a good chance that you overpaid tax and are entitled to a tax refund. By filing your tax return, you can apply for your tax refund and get your tax back!
